2019 Wishlist

Hello, lovely querying writers. There is a plethora of #MSWL information on Twitter that I’ve posted over the years. (Click here to read it all.) But I wanted to share what I am really hunting for in the slush pile at this moment.

+ Historical Fiction: like WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING and THE GREAT ALONE. I like setting that feels like a character.

+ Commercial Fiction and Rom Coms: (especially with a diverse cast!) like AYESHA AT LAST, JANE THE VIRGIN, ONE DAY IN DECEMBER, THE PROPOSAL, and Elin Hilderbrand. I need a very strong hook.

+ Upmarket Fiction: like LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE, COMMONWEALTH and THE LAST ROMANTICS. I love family drama.

+ Fiction with a splash of whimsy: like THE TWELVE LIVES OF SAMUEL HAWLEY and WHERE THE FOREST MEETS THE STARS. Not quite magical realism but maybe.

+ Women’s Fiction: like CHARLOTTE WALSH LIKES TO WIN, FAMILY TRUST, EVERGREEN TIDINGS FROM THE BAUMGARTNERS and SEVEN DAYS OF US.

+ Domestic Suspense: like ALL IS NOT FORGOTTEN and THE PERFECT NANNY.

+ Memoir: like NO ONE TELLS YOU THIS and EDUCATED.

+ Literary Mystery/Thriller: STAY WITH ME and ALL THINGS CEASE TO APPEAR.

+ Cookbooks: like OVEN TO TABLE, MODERN LUNCH and EAT MORE PLANTS.

+ Business/Current Affairs: like THE FIFTH TRIMESTER, HEARTLAND, DOUBLE BIND, and EVERYTHING IS NEGOTIABLE.

Also, of course, check out my recent client books to see where my taste lies: WHERE THE FOREST MEETS THE STARS, THE NIGHT OLIVIA FELL, DEAD RECKONING, ANOTHER GOOD DOG, THE WOO WOO, RIVER BODIES, NOBODY CARES, SHE REGRETS NOTHING, THE SUBWAY GIRLS and more!

*****Very much interested in #ownvoices and LGBTQ+ submissions*****

It’s already published, but you might like my novel, The Half-Life of Everything, (upmarket? high concept?). David is a very happily married fifty-something when his wife is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. She is there but she’s gone. After some years he wonders what a “married widower” should do with the rest of his life. He finds love again, but not long after, an experimental clinical trial restores his wife to health. If you loved old movies where someone long thought dead (usually a shipwreck!) returns just after their spouse remarries…

A novel of marriage, difficult choices, and above all––friendship.

  2. Diligently revising and polishing a manuscript you requested the full of several months ago based off pitch/first page. Checks plenty of those boxes for you. I hope to get it to you very soon (she said as her sick preschooler coughed all over her laptop, and her face).

  3. Are you interested in books which are already selling on Amazon? Strong female characters take center stage in my writing. An action-adventure novel and a murder mystery are currently on Amazon but historical fiction is my favorite genre, which I am currently working on. Could you please let me know if you like query letters with sample chapters? Or what is the best way to connect with you?

  4. Hi Carly – I think you might like my summer rom com novel. Hopewell Island is inspired by Shelter Island, NY, a small town off of the Hamptons.

Lila owns the successful Half Moon Vineyard and has just gotten engaged. However, Davis, a local preservationist is trying to shut down her business, because of the drinking culture it fosters. Lila also recently hired a handsome chef to run his food truck out of the parking lot of her winery. Despite her fiance, she is instantly attracted to her new business partner.

Her friend Paige has returned to Hopewell Island for the summer after shutting down her failing, fashion blog and Instagram account. While on Hopewell, Paige begins dating a wealthy hotelier/nightclub owner, Terrence, that may be able to help revive her career. However, he has an abusive streak, hidden by his charm. Paige also spars with uptight Davis, because of her relationships with Lila and Terrence. Davis despises anyone that might change the small town charm of Hopewell. He especially hates Terrence, because The High Tide (Terrence’s hotel and bar) is located behind Davis’ home.
