The Author’s Publishing Playbook
is here.

Proven strategies to prepare your manuscript, pitch your book, and get your work published. Unlock the methods to staying published and successfully promoting your books.

  • Without cobbling together your own book publishing research from unknown sources

  • Without trying to DIY your MFA

  • Without questioning the expertise of who you’re learning from

  • Without having to launch a book with no plan

  • Without spending years learning the publishing process

The Mistakes I Keep Seeing Writers Making:

  • You lack clarity on how the book business works, which leads to a misunderstanding of how agents select clients and how everyone makes money.

  • You struggle to know how to exist on the internet so you waste your precious time with strategies that aren’t effective for growth, community, or sales.

  • You have your eye on one book deal, but to be a career author there’s so much more to understand about sales trajectory, writing books with hooks, and the unpredictable rollercoaster of financials in a creative field.

This is the blueprint:

PREPARE
PITCH
PUBLISH
PROMOTE

After spending 14 years as a literary agent representing clients, teaching at writing workshops around North America, co-hosting The Shit No One Tells You About Writing podcast, and reading hundreds of thousands of query letters, I’ve seen authors fail to get the success they dearly want because they lack the insider knowledge. I saw the opportunity to provide an information-rich, expert-led publishing course that takes the worry away from authors and empowers them to make strong business decisions.

Over 1,120 literary agents in North America
Over 200 million* Americans want to publish a book in their lifetime

*From Publishing Perspectives

I created this course because, after creating content on social media, blogs, podcasts, newsletters, keynotes, and webinars for 14 years, I’ve seen the impact the lack of knowledge has on your writing journey. I have offered specialized insight on individual course topics in the past, but now it's time to put it all together.

After completing my MA in Publishing Studies in London, England and working at one of the most prestigious literary agencies in London, I became obsessed with helping writers make their dreams come true. I joined Toronto-based P.S. Literary Agency in 2010 and have sold over 100 books in my career. My clients’ books have been translated into over 40 languages, optioned for TV and film, adapted into podcasts, and have been on every bestseller list from coast to coast, including The New York Times, USA Today, LA Times, The Washington Post, Toronto Star, and The Globe and Mail.

I am known for my long-term vision for my authors and being an excellent collaborator with a nose for commercial success. I have close ties to publishers in the major markets, am a member of the AALA, and work directly with film agents to option film and TV rights to leading networks and production companies. The Shit No One Tells You About Writing podcast, which I co-host, has over 3 million downloads.

This course offers the same framework that I’ve used to generate life-changing results for my clients.

Most writers will give up before they get published, but it’s often from lack of understanding about how the book business works. I’ve helped writers make millions of dollars from their writing. If you have the talent, intellect, and the drive to succeed, this framework of knowledge will give you clarity on what is missing in your publishing journey.

This is for you EVEN IF:

  • You haven’t finished your book yet

  • You aren’t sure if you want to self-publish or traditionally publish

  • You already sold your book

  • You are mid-career

This is for you.

The Author’s Publishing Playbook will help you avoid trying to DIY your way through an MFA or a Masters in Publishing, avoid mass rejection, avoid constant frustration and confusion, avoid not tapping into your potential, avoid not maximizing your content, and avoid the mistake of writing a book and it not generating money for you because you don’t know what you don’t know.

She is able to break down complex information into deliverable chunks. She is open to questions and upfront if she doesn’t know something (which isn’t often). Her slides/handouts are great as well. Carly manages to make online classes interesting and engaging.”

— Star Wuerdemann

“Carly’s knowledge is deep and ever-growing, and she shares it in an organized, easy-to-comprehend way. I’ve attended almost all her webinars now and still refer back to them for different writing needs like my query letters or my first five pages. She’s a stinking rock star. I cannot recommend her webinars enough!”

A librarian’s daughter, I was never without a book in hand. I studied English Lit at Queen’s University and wasn’t ready to be done with books and reading. After a program in the UK at City University London for my MA in Publishing Studies, I leapt feet-first into the world of literary agenting in 2009 and I never looked back. I joined PSLA in 2010 and it’s been my home ever since. It has been a joy to make writers’ dreams come true over the last 14 years in the business.

I fell in love with author branding and social media marketing in the early 2010s when I started my literary agent career. Glendy Vanderah, Bestselling Author of Where the Forest Meets the Stars

My literary agent, Carly Watters, is the number one reason I can now say I have two published books on bookshelves across North America. She was the one who spearheaded Anchorboy, and she was the one who encouraged me to get to work right away on a second book even if I was somewhat unsure about my ability to get the work done. Carly never stopped believing that I could finish another one, and along the way she offered wonderful advice and encouragement about the text. She’s not just an agent but a great friend in my life.

Jay Onrait, Bestselling Author of Number Two

First, thank you to my agent, Carly Watters, who believed in me years ago when I pitched her the book that never actually got published. It’s meant a lot to have you in my corner and to know that even when I was beginning to lose faith in myself, you kept it. Our lives have changed a lot over the last half decade, but I’m so happy to still have you in mine.
